Isis

Been too long since I've drawn on paper! I love the feel of pencil on paper, computers are great, but you just can't beat the tactile feel and feedback of good old analog drawing!

I was doodling and did this one:

I liked her and decided to do some good old character designing. Grabbed some Egyptian books and good Old Illustrated Mythology book for reference.

The sun and the scarab are sacred symbols for the Egyptians and there's a great story of how the dung beetle(scarab) pushing a ball of dung was like RA rotating the earth.

Being a big fan of Dieties and Demigods, my Isis had to be bare chested, plus all the paintings I referenced had her that way, so I'll use that as my defense.

Her corset was too reminscent of the armour from the Bram Stoker Dracula movie, which I didn't mind, but I wanted to it be more Egyptian.

Back to references so I used a reed pattern to link the Nile to the character.

But what about her back?

A little homage to Masamune Shirow

Some design notes, her head dress has a sun on it and on that sun is a scarab. Her head dress does not touch her and neither do her wings, they hover just in front and behind her. The white lines on her hair are the horizontal bar on the ankh which appears on the back of her hair.

I still need to do more work especially on her gauntlets which are very Witchblade like I confess, but I was leaning more toward Staragate Goa'uld technology.

Storyboards from Aquamarine

Finally put up some boards, I grabbed some images from the trailer so you can compare, I find that's a cool way to present boards. And it shows just how hard we worked to make sure all the shots were planned out as early as possible.

Click here to check them out.

PC Club Cowgirl

Was at work and one fo the guys emails me and says they need a western themed image for an L.A. Times Ad, so threw this together.

Aquamarine

I saw Aquamarine on Friday, opening night at the theatre close to my work. It was really weird watching my storyboards moving around up there on the big screen. Every scene that I boarded was up there just the way I drew them. The director and I spent a great deal and effort working through all those boards, tweaking and finessing, it was a lot of give and take. Extremely satisfying was seeing sequences and transitions that I thought up and she agreed upon, incorporated and working. Of course the biggest kick was seeing my name in the credits, which by the way I was able to get a frame of, as soon as I actually have it, I'll scan it and put it up!

Reviews-wise, it seemed to do alright, 5th in box office and if you read the Yahoo reviews, the people loved it, while the critics gave a nodd to the fact that it was a targeted movie and those targeted generally liked it, I'm sure if any of the critics were 13 year old girls, they would have loved it. The audience I was with all laughed at the righ spots, and the sounds of sniffling at the sad moments could also be detected.

Now I have to take the rest of my family to go see it!

Coming soon to a theatre near you

Last year I spent several months in Australia storyboarding a movie, it's finally coming out March 3rd! You can watch the trailer and see some photos over at the official site. The trailer link goes to moviefone and you will have to use IE to view it as it requires ActiveX, I'm hoping for a quicktime link soon. From what I've seen, the shots are very close to the storyboards, the Director and I worked very close and hard to get almost every single scene boarded before shooting! I hope to show off the boards soon, and I hear that they are doing a making of movie and they have a copy of my boards as well.
